Causes:
It is a rheumatic disease with strong genetic association. About 90% Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) patients have HLA-B27 genotype finding.
Symptoms:
- Mostly begins at the age of 20 to 30 yr.
- Pain and stiffness of lower back
- Pain and stiffness increased with rest and improves with activity
- Early morning pain which awakes you
- Dull pain at the early stage of disease, later as disease progresses, pain becomes constant and movement restricted.
- Fever, Digestion trouble, Bodyche, Bloating, Constipation, Lethargy, Fatigue etc. symptoms may be seen.
- Progressively others joint pain and stiffness may begin.
Diagnosis:
- X-ray/MRI : It reveals ‘Bamboo spine’ appearance of spine.
- Blood Test: CRP and ESR are mostly raised but not always. It could be normal. HLA B27 gene blood test may be useful to diagnose.
