Here Agnikarma means application of heat (Agni) to the specific point of the body. It provides quick pain relief within seconds.
Acharya Sushruta mentioned in his book ‘Sushruta Samhita’ that diseases which don’t cure by medicines and sharp instruments will be cured by fire (Agni) (Su.Su.12/3). He mentioned different instruments for Agnikarma.
Best season for Agnikarma:
- Hemanta and Shishira (winter), Varsha (Monsoon).
- Should not be done in extreme hot weather.
Method of Agnikarma:
Patient is advised to sleep in appropriate position. Then site of pain is accessed. Most Tender points are chosen for Agnikarma. Then Shalaka (Rod) is kept on fire till we want appropriate temperature. Then Shalaka is applied on tender points of the body and therapeutic burns are created. The knowledge of how much pressure should be applied by shalaka on tender points is a subject of speciality gained by lot of experience. After Agnikarma Specific herbal lotion should be applied. It provides instant relief from burning. It should be applied continuously for next days until scar heals.
It is very ancient but scientific method. It is not just a ‘burn’ which is done in our villages by some people for treatment of few diseases. Agnikarma must be practiced by qualified Ayurveda physician.
Shalaka (Rod) Used:
Different metals are used to make Agnikarma Shalaka. Generally Copper, Panchadhatu, Silver and Gold Shalakas are to be used for different purposes. Agnikarma by Gold and Silver Shalaka is more costly than others but more effective and painless.
Indications:
- All types of Musculo-skeleton pain like knee pain, Sciatica, Frozen shoulder etc.
Results:
- Generally Agnikarma procedure is done every week depending upon patient’s condition.
- 3 to 8 sittings of Agnikarma procedure can be done depending upon severity of disease.
- Generally pain reduces 50% to 100% after single sitting of Agnikarma in most of the cases.
